The big speaker is a subwoofer that plays bass. That is all it does. The two smaller speakers are where the majority of your sound will come from. They plug into the back of the subwoofer and run through it, so to answer your question....you would have to use all 3 together. The small speakers have pretty long cables to allow for quite a bit of flexibility.
