You have to have an audio out jack on the tv or the cable box, provided you don’t use a audio system. Then it’s a little trickier.

On the Insignia, when the headphone transmitter is plugged in, it automatically goes to the headphones and silences the speakers. On the LG, when the headphone transmitter is plugged in, it automatically goes to the headphones too, but it does not silence the speakers. I lowered the speaker volume to 0 to see if it affected the headphones and it didn't. I hope this helps!
