Do you have to install the tipping restraint? I have not received it yet, but looked at the assembly video and saw it provided a tipping restraint. Is this absolutely necessary to install?

I intend to put my DVR, DVD, stereo receiver, and CD player components, and two older style bookshelf speakers (21hx12wx12d) on the shelves and use the swivel mount for a 50" tv.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!

I did not use the tipping restraint as the stand is heavy and my 42"tv is rock steady. I also have equipment on the shelves and there is no movement if you bang into the unit.

Yes, we always recommend using the tipping restraint. This restraint provides additional security for the stand.
