The vertical part of the stand is composed of two pieces. One piece attaches to the base of the stand. The other vertical piece has notches and attaches to the vertical component which is attached to the base. The spacing of the notches allows you to position the vertical piece that allows you to vary the vertical height placement of the TV from the base.
