This one did not work for me and I returned it (last one in stock). I found a similar one in another store and it worked fine. Did not need to be mounted on camera...has separate on/off switch for use on a stand, etc.

Yes, it runs off of batteries and can be used without hooking to the hot shoe.

Yes, this unit will work without being attached to a camera but the only way of mounting the unit is with the hot shoe attachment on a camera.
