System was restarted multiple times, all indicators saying device working just fine. Gave up and returned the device; it was unclear whether an OS side problem or a device failure. Instead I got an HDMI -> mini-DP adapter, since my laptop had that port and I had not noticed it previously. Now I have two monitors running fine.
