“I keep getting the same error when I try to set this up. I get to the WiFi stage of set up, it connects and then it tells me something went wrong, that my iPhone can’t “communicate” with the device and doesn’t tell me how to fix it.”

You have to get your phone on the same Home network and have the Bluetooth on the phone on at the same time. If doesn't work you have to return it for a new one. The setup should be effortless
