“Will this work with a Nikon Coolpix L840? I don't have a DSLR but the Coolpix I do have is digital, however because of the subject I shoot, I would like to have a remote so that I can keep the camera on a monopod and hold it up to get the shot.”

The best option I have found is going to be to just try the wired remote with your camera. Best Buy does offer a 15 day return policy so you would have the opportunity to return if it does not work.
