“Does this need a wire transmitter with it or does it just sync with the camera?”

I have the Nikon D5500, and all I have to do is select the remote function within my camera and it's automatically ready for use. There are no wires or special connetions needed.

It is wireless, but it depends on if your camera is compatible. For some cameras you'll need an adapter that plugs in to the camera, but the remote will still be wireless. If it is compatible (or if you plug in the adapter) the remote will automatically connect if you change the shutter release mode to ML-L3 remote mode. Hopefully that helps.
