I actually read that you should leave it on at 400 for about a half hour before cooking anything in it to avoid the odor. That's what we did and haven't noticed an odor. Haven't noticed the bottom getting to hot for the counter but I moved mine away from the wall when using. That does get pretty hot.

This smell should go away after running a few times and cleaning thoroughly. Please contact our Customer Care team if it persists or if you have any concerns. The unit is safe to use on countertops, always ensure that it has 5 inches of space around it when in use.
