Depends on where you get the memory chips and which brand. Dell sells the chips online at about $300 for 16GB (4-DIMMs) but compatible memory is available from the other usual suspects. The big annoyance is that the existing 8GB double inline memory modules (DIMMs) become worthless to you unless you can repurpose them in another machine. The standard 8GB comes as four 2GB chips, one chip in each available socket. 16GB comes as four 4GB chips so you can't just add 8GB easily.
