• No. You don’t need a smartphone to operate it. It has buttons on top you can manually push to start cleaning. However you do need a smartphone to schedule cleanings (every MWF @ 1p for example).

• You do not! All Roombas can be operated by simply pressing the Clean button on the robot itself. You may also want to consider an unconnected robot, like the Roomba 614.
