• The robot functions without the app, but you need the app to set up the time and days you want it to clean.

• Roomba is a very thoughtful gift for an older parent, and is very simple to use. You don't need the app to run the robot or have it return to its base to recharge. You do need it to schedule, though. If you prefer a non-WiFi model, you could consider the Roomba 614.
