No, you press the button on top to turn on or off. If ypu want, you can download the app, but not necessary

Hello Janice! No, you don’t have to use a smart phone to operate the Roomba. You can just press the Clean button, but our full suite of features can be activated using the iRobot HOME App on a Smart Device.
