This cleans in straight and random lines just depends on what cleaning algorithm it is working off of at that moment. If you are sever clinical OCD then maybe stay away, me on the other hand just seeing the vacuum's clean lines on my carpet is enough for me.

Yes the 980 does do straight lines. And when it completes the vast back and forth it goes around the perimeter of the rooms to get all the corners and crevices. My wife is SUPER OCD and she is happy with the 980's work.

Yes, it definitely works in straight lines and looks fantastic afterwards. It’s hard to see in this photo (looks better in person) but if you zoom in you can see the straight lines.

The Roomba is more random motion in appearance. There is a method to the madness as it does eventually get to all the spots; however, it may go between rooms before finishing.
