I can't say about the stairs - but I have multiple types of area rugs. This Roomba does very well on all of them except for the 2.5" shag. It doesn't seem to be able to move it's wheels well enough in the deep pile and stops part way through (also moves very slowly there, so I have created a 'no go' zone and do that rug manually). I have another 1.5" plush where it does fine. So I would say if your carpet has 2" or higher pile, it will have difficulty.

Or ours also come with two physical barrier “cones” we could set up to create an invisible barrier line between the cones (they are just small black boxes). We didn’t end up using the “cones” though since it worked fine to set it up a barrier in the app.
