“The specifications say the bin capacity is 0.42 gallons. Is that the capacity of the bin on the vacuum itself, or is that the bin capacity of the base that it empties itself in to? If it is just the vacuum, then what is the capacity of the base.”

This is the base. The vacuum capacity isn’t really relevant since this version goes back to base to empty itself, then continues where it left off. We have had ours for two months so far and have several hairy dogs. Haven’t had to empty it yet.
