The usb is used for sound feature. Its not required for firing up the system.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No, not for my setup. Mine is plugged into the VGA connector of an old MAC G4 Quicksilver server, and the HDMI side is feeding the HDMI input of a 1080P 42" TV (looks great). The USB tail is hanging idle.
