• Yes, they can be used one at a time. I often do that with mine.

• You don't need to use the earbuds together. You can do any earbud or the two together whichever way you like. Believe this is one of the power points of these earbuds is that each bus can work as a stand alone while the other is turned off. They function the same and have the same type of button and controls believe unless you customize them via the app.
