No, you can use SIri to read all notifications that come to you. these are just for listening to music, answering calls, and changing tracks.

Not that I know of by default. You can use Google now though & that has a lot of commands to it. I know within deep "accessibility" settings I can set my phone to read out my messages for me. The one other thing I was surprised about, to compare to using other headphones in the past was the ability to pause, fast forward within all my music apps, like pandora, milk music, spotify, etc ...

If your phone can read our messages it will play through but if not the earbuds will not play text messages.
