“If the rear speakers are just charged via USB C do they remain fully charged detached, in use & connected to USB C? Or does the battery drain when in use regardless of a USB C connection, i.e. there’s no way to use them independently w/o power disruption?”

Thank you for your inquiry. The rear speakers can be used while charging, and if the battery charge drops below a certain point, the unit will automatically recharge the battery while in use. Also, if you wish to use the rear speakers while charging via USB, once you turn on the soundbar, you may need to manually power on the rear speakers.
