This is a pair of speakers, so can play in stereo. They can used as part of LCR (left, center, right) setup using the matching JBL stage 2 Center speaker for home theater use. You can further expand to 5.0 setup by adding rear surrounds (another set of these bookshelves or JBL makes a matching set of rear surrounds in this range). From there you can keep going by adding a subwoofer for 5.1, or go at height channels for a Dolby Atmos setup (5.0.2, 5.1.2, 5.1.4) etc. Any of these setups require a proper receiver to power them and process the sound properly
