Your phone has to be within approx 33 feet of the bluetooth earbuds.

Assuming your phone is the source for itunes, then I do agree with your thoughts that you would need to have your phone with you. I use Pandora from my phone and connect to music much like you do and if I walk far enough away from my phone I will lose signal.
