• The iPhone will connect via Bluetooth for calling, but not for CarPlay. You have to connect to usb for CarPlay to work. There are models that have wireless CarPlay but they are a lot more expensive. As an aside, the phone sometimes get confused in calls as to which speaker to use: CarPlay or Bluetooth. And the unit does not help because it will not use Bluetooth if in CarPlay mode, so I have to manually switch the audio output to CarPlay on the phone to hear a call. Sometimes.

• Both. You can just connect via Bluetooth. But if you want to use carplay or Android auto, you use the USB connection.
