The mounting plate is about an inch and a 1/2 wide by about 12" long there are holes already in the plate. mounting holes are on the top, bottom and middle of the length of the plate. It would depend on how heavy the TV is if only one mounting bolt will attach to the stud and the other 2 bolts are in dry wall. You may want to add a mounting board on the existing wall that would span more area and give more support.
