It has a battery in it but the battery has a pretty short run time and is primarily meant for use if someone hits your vehicle while it is parked to record the event. For normal recording, it needs to be plugged in.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes it has to be plugged it to work. I installed a 12v port under my dash that is always hot and leave it plugged it. I forget to turn it off once in a while but the camera has a sensor to detect when your battery is low and will shut itself off so it wont drain the battery.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I plug mine in when I get into car and unplug it every time I park it. The settings stay put. If you get the kit to hard wire it and leave it in to run for motion while your not in vehicle then you would need to leave it plugged in I. Order for it to work. But it does save images/videos while unplugged. Sad card is in it to save that. It will not turn on without being plugged in.
