“I hooked up the positive and negative the radio will not turn on. However I hear a clicking noise, I have the positive from battery to the yellow and black to black. The manual says the red goes thru a ignition the hot side, does red and yellow need tied?”

No, the red goes to a positive connection that only gets power when the key is turned on. Gone yellow is a constant positive connection that requires power at all times.
