Keurig no longer includes an in-reservoir water filter system with the initial purchase of their coffee makers. They say that it will work without a filter (which is true), but it's not a good idea to use unfiltered water in the machine. Doing so will allow scale to build-up much faster and reduce the function and pump life. You can separately purchase a Keurig Short Handle Water Filter Starter Kit separately for about $14 or pre-filter the water you put into the reservoir.
