Yes you must use the carfe pod when using the carfe but it is so worth it if more than one person is drinking at the same time. If not you should use the single serve. You also have the option to purchase the reusable pod or carfe pod. If cost is a factor or they do not sell you brand the reusable pod is worth the price. I have both.
