Technically you dont need a bass knob at all but i do recommend getting one with out a doubt! Its way more convenient when you simply want to turn up/down your bass level to match your preferred balance between vocal and bass. Not to mention most songs nowadays bass levers can increased drastically from song to song so having a bass knob it can really save you from blowing a sub. However make sure the bass knob is compatible with the system you have... This one wasn't compatible with my system and had to spend another $50 to get one that was. Hope this Helps
