Yes, you can use it with or without the convection.

Hi Top, The convection fan will be used only during Convection based cycles and can not be manually turned off. It will also be used during Preheat to speed that process up, again this is controlled by the control panel and not manually adjustable. Thank you for your interest in KitchenAid!
