“Is there a cover that goes over the back of these speakers, that keep them protected? And if so, how much clearance is needed to recess them into the ceiling? I have about 5-1/2" from my finished ceiling into the attic.”

I dont know about clearance but there is no back part or protection from the back. They are open to the ceiling once mounted. I never thought about making a box for them up in attic like you can for a car woofers.
