I plug mine into the outlet, not extension cord, if your's was plugged into the wall outlet, then you may have a Faulty outlet? We keep ours on low to conserve energy.

I found out that the cord was not long enough from the outlet to where it needed to be to provide heat to my Dad. So an extension cord was used. I noticed that the extension cord was heating up amd quickly removed it. To be honest with any electric heater you should never use an extension cord. Plug it directly into the outlet. This product is great and helps heat up our rooms when needed. actually bought 2 more and we are using them right now.
