Just open up the Chromebook so the top and bottom backside halves fold against each other and rotate the Chromebook 90 degrees so you are looking at it like a book.

First, check in settings under accessibility, that the "Auto Rotate" feature is checked. If that is not the issue, it is possible that a recent Chrome OS update may be causing the failure.
