• It has to be set up with a smartphone, then it can just run by itself.

• You do need a phone for initial setup. Once it is setup it would not require the phone. If you need to and or remove and thing you would need the phone again for setup. Long story short is if you are setting up or making changes then you will need the phone. But once you have added everything and setup it up it can run as a stand alone unit running on wifi.

• Hi Pattie, Your Lenovo Smart Clock requires a smartphone or tablet with the google home app installed to be setup. Once your clock is setup it only needs Wi-Fi to function.
