“Does the 16gb of ram fill two slots with 8gb ram sticks? I want to upgrade to 32 gb and need to know if I would need to add one stick of 16gb or two sticks of 16 gb and remove two sticks of 8gb ram. Thank you.”

There's 8GB non-replaceable, and 8GB replicable. So, you can replace the one module with 16GB to get 24GB total, or 32GB for 40GB total. I did the latter, and it works perfectly.
