“Might be a dumb question but this is my first new laptop in many years. If I plug a headset into the headphone jack, does the headset microphone work? Or, do I have to use the built in microphone?”

May depend on the headset, but most will yes. The headphone jack is combined with the microphone jack.

But could be wrong. No mic logo to point as such. If it's important I suggest contacting Lenovo first. No dumb questions here!
