This is a very versatile system. It is extremely powerful with its Intel Core I-7 processor, a discrete graphics card and 16GB of RAM. It would be a great choice for a college student.

The 256 GB SSD might be a little too small, but you can always buy a 1 TB portable/external HDD for < $60 OR have the SSD upgraded to 512 GB RAM (for $200-$300+ by yourself, the Geek Squad, etc.). I did the former. One might also need to buy a portable/external DVD/Blu-ray player but that's true with almost all laptops today. Most kids stream videos via Netflix, Hulu, etc. anyway. As long as the battery lasts close to the claimed 8 hrs, this would be an excellent college laptop. I would have the college-bound student try out the keyboard. track pad, etc at your local Best Buy first though (e.g., the track pad has too much friction for me, but works well and my daughter really likes it). My one complaint is that the power cord for the battery is only about 5 feet long. That's rather short for a laptop..
