Actually there are 2 filters the first one is white True HEPA Filter Traps airborne bacteria, pollen, mold and dust and the second one is black Active Carbon Filter captures and neutralizes various household odors such as pet odors or cigarette. As far as how often do you have to change the filters it depends of the environment, I bought mine about a month and half and it's at 82%
