There is a child safety button on the side of the microwave near the door release that at factory settings must be pushed first in order for the door release to operate. However, the child safety button on the side has a slot in it that allows you to turn it to off and then you only need to press the door release to open the door. I almost didn't buy this microwave because of this feature, but after bringing it home and reading the manual, I realized it could be turned off and then the microwave door release is only one step.
