“I was reading up on the new Roku Ultra and it sounds like it should be able to control sound bar volume (sometimes at least) when connected through HDMI . Has anyone tested this out? I have an LG TV as well so I am hoping everything will work together...”

"Simplink" is LG's name for HDMI CEC (HDMI Consumer Electronics Control) which is a control function that lets one A/V component control another if they are connected via HDMI cables that was defined in HDMI Specification 1.0 and updated in HDMI 1.2, HDMI 1.2a and HDMI 1.3a and is supported in the HDMI 1.4 ports on the LG 2.1 ch High Resolution Audio Sound Bar, Model # SJ4Y-S. ^CP
