Yes but the sound is much better with the sub-woofer. The sub-woofer is completely separate and is not even attached (via cables or anything) to the soundbar. All you have to do for the sub-woofer is plug it in. That means you can put it anywhere you want to (it doesn't have to be near the soundbar).

You do not have to hook it up but if you do the remote has a separate volume function for the subwoofer so you can have the sound coming out of the sound bar and not the sub.
