Extending the vent hood is not required to run the vent fan. There are four filter air inlets in the hood. Two are toward the back and are always uncovered allowing the vent fan to run without extending the hood. Extending the hood reveals two more filtered air inlets, doubling the air intake space. To me this is one of those “nice to have” features that isn’t entirely necessary, useful is smoke is produced from the front stovetop burners below or if smoke is unusually thick.
