“Are the back vents always down or only when the extendavent is pulled out?”

The vent works when in and when extended.

Over the Range Microwave in Stainless Steel with Sensor Cook, Model # LMHM2237ST has an Auto Vent Feature that helps dissipate the heat from your cooktop. When you microwave senses an increase in the temperature from your cooktop below, it will automatically turn the Auto Vent Feature on to create a safer environment for you. You will not be able to turn this feature off during the Auto Vent operation. It will automatically turn off once your microwave determines that the area below has reached a safe temperature. The unit also has a Slide-Out hood that can be extended forward during cooking to allow more effective capture of smoke and vapor from range-top cooking. We hope this helps.
