• No, you do not need to use the filter. The filter head on this model should auto bypass the filter when the filter is removed from the unit. ^Daphane

• Hi, I would l check with the manufacturer, but I think you would need to have the filter in place as it closes the water system. Without the filter you would just have the water tube open that would leak into the refrigerator. Hope this helps.
