Ice maker is above the tray when drawer is closed, and remains stationary while drawers slides out, making getting to the ice very easy. The wire bar you refer to is not present on this model, but it never gets over full so must have some other clever method of "knowing" when tray is full. Per instructions, we let it fill up for a day or two, emptied, then all is good. That rids the machine of factory residues. Cubes are about 3/4 inch square, smaller than regular ice cube trays make.
