You might try using pieces of the 1/4" tubing made for air lines on fish tanks (clear) or the black tubing made for drip irrigation. Heat the end in hot water if it's hard to push onto the end of the tines. Then to stiffen it (so it doesn't bend over from the hot water when running) insert pieces of bamboo skewers or coat hanger wire cut to size, and seal the ends with silicone.

If you are using fewer units than shown in the pictures, spacing the plates would keep them from falling over each other and getting chipped...^IFV
