I've used tablets and gels from both Finish and Cascade. Tablets clean heavily soiled loads better and may keep the machine itself cleaner. Gels are less expensive and perfectly fine for normal use but may not clean the heaviest loads as well. Any dishwasher approved detergent should work. Dish washing soap should never be used as it will cause excessive suds, poor cleaning, and possibly leaks.
