Yes, it will play both Cds and DVDs and it only connects via HDMI.

I haven't tried listening directly from the external device. I have been downloading the songs into my computer to add to my iTunes library. It uses a USB cord (comes with the device.) It does not need HDMI, and has no attachment for one. When I first plugged it in to my computer and put in the first CD, it asked me what I wanted to do - listening my have been an option, but I don't remember. It downloads the songs into my computer very quickly. I recommend this.
