“I see that a lot of the negative reviews are regarding linear compressor failures. Apparently there may be a manufacturing flaw. Do the new units sold now have an updated compressor that addresses the cause of these failures?”

What do you consider new? Mine is 2 years old and currently not working and I'm being told that I'll be waiting 6 weeks before anyone will even come to my house to look at it!
